Senior Network and Security Engineer

ABN AMRO Clearing Information Technology has a global focus with many programs on both a national and global level. The organization is self-supporting, running its own projects, applications and hosting them from its own data centers across the globe. Architecture and portfolio management are global domains. IT development, maintenance, support and IT operations are provided by three regional organizations: IT Europe, IT US and IT APAC.


Considering Information Technology as a main part of clearing services, the IT systems and processes have to meet ABN AMRO Clearing strategy demands and internal and external regulations.

Your job

What the core activities are in the role:


  • Plan, prepare and implement changes to the environment in a manageable way under consideration of change windows.
  • Ensure Network Availability - Ensure the network is up and available in accordance with service level agreements – proactively looking for problems, change related or general.
  • Monitor and enhance network security elements through an evolutionary process globally.
  • Support – Provide support to other IT teams. This includes second line fixes and diagnosis of network and firewall problems.
  • Maintain documentation.
  • Implement projects on time and on budget.

  • Jobholders are expected to maintain flexibility and perform all other reasonable duties that relate to the work.


Specific responsibilities include support related to:


  • Network Infrastructure
  • Data Centre Experience (xconnects, technologies and processes)
  • MAN/WAN MPLS and Routing
  • CISCO LAN/MAN Connectivity
  • Firewalls and VPN (site to site)
  • Advanced network security systems, IDS, IPS, NGFW
  • Global WAN infrastructure
  • Client and third party connectivity setup and debugging

ABN AMRO UK is part of the Corporate Banking business line and operates the following businesses in the UK:


  • Corporate and Institutional Banking – which includes  Corporate Banking, Clearing Global Markets - Sales & Trading, Escrow & Settlement, and Financial Institutions
  • Commercial Banking which includes Asset Based Finance and International Desk, which provides transactional banking services

Our business lines are supported by a number of functions such as Risk, Compliance, Legal, IT, Finance (Including Tax), Business Management and Human Resources. We currently employ approx. 380 individuals in the UK.


Your profile

Ideally degree educated, or a strong academic record to at least GCSE and/or A Level standard (including mathematics)

  • Cisco certification CCNP/CCIE Routing/Switching or equivalent experience
  • Proven experience working in a similar role with a banking/financial networks background
  • Firewall, VPN, NATting
  • In depth knowledge of network security, best practices and technologies
  • A proper understanding LAN and WAN technologies and protocols
  • MPLS, Routing (BGP, OSPF), vrf-lite
  • Solid experience with data centre functions, processes and technologies to successfully implement and manage changes, prepare changes and steer remote-hands if needed
  • Network monitoring and management tools
  • Metropolitan Area Network connectivity and relevant connectivity knowledge
  • In depth experience with market exchange connectivity
  • Inter-Enterprise connectivity and issues relating to it


Essential experience:


  • CISCO (LAN, MAN, WAN): Cisco switches and routers IOS and NXOS: EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VRFs, QOS, routing, switching
  • Firewall (Essential Cisco ASA)
  • Internet / IPSEC VPN
  • Using NMS systems, reporting and alerting functions, general networking housekeeping tasks
